Start Watching GetBackers
Here starts the review (by Shimus_Darkraven):
Today, I’ll look at the recovery services Tokyo would employ, if the recoverers had special powers – Otherwise known as “Get Backers” (poster inset)
The main set of characters are an odd bunch, but they become downright serious when business is at hand. Ginji Amano and Ban Mido are a pair of superpowered individuals known as the GetBackers. The duo operates a freelance repossession service out of one of the seedier areas of Shinjuku, Tokyo.
For a fee, they will recover any lost or stolen item for a client with “a 100% success rate” (that’s their motto!). The GetBackers job often leads them into bizarre and dangerous situations in order to take back what was stolen. Comedy ensues some of time, but it’s mostly a fighting/action show.
Their targets can range from lost video games to misplaced rings or memories – no matter what, if they take on a job, they complete it. The plot mostly revolves around their adventures, often complicated by the pair’s convoluted, individual pasts and a mysterious place known as the Limitless Fortress. Character development is a big plus for me – they get plenty of it in flashbacks, allowing you to see (and in my opinion, more cooler) Ginji, and where Ban was before he teamed up with Ginji.
The Limitless Fortress is a mini-city of disused, condemned buildings clustered together to form a self-contained habitat. Limitless Fortress is subdivided into three specific tiers – Lower Town (streets, buildings, entry levels of the tower), the Beltline (the mid region of the tower) and Babylon City (the highest levels of the tower). Ginji lived here, along with many of the people you will meet. A good chunk of the first season revolves around this place, and pretty well done as an arc, I must say.
Along the way, many allies are made, many enemies are fought. Decent fights and battles make this a very enjoyable series if you like comedy along with good action.
I’d rate this a 4.5/5 on my viewing scale. Likeable characters like Akabane (bad guys are cooler, come on now.) And Ginji when he enters lightning emperor mode is pretty cool. The other characters make a nice supporting cast, and although it feels kind of episodic in season two, it does get better and continues to impress. My only gripe is seemed a little short. All good shows leave you wanting more eh? Anyways, I highly recommend this series.
