New Season Spotlight: 07-Ghost

(Contains spoilers for the Pilot Episode -but just enough to get a decent review!)

From now on, with the starting lineup for any season be it fall, winter, summer, or spring, I’ll do an anime spotlight on one (excuse the partiality here) anime I feel is really decent. Today’s is about a currently airing show called “07-Ghost” and one of my personal favorite sub groups, Dattebayo, is handling it, so we can guarantee speedy subbing (one day, usually)

Teito Klein is a former slave or “Sklave” sent to attend the Empire’s military academy due to his ability to use ‘Zaiphon,’ a type of supernatural power one harnesses. The ability is a rarity, and thus highly sought after. Teito is an amnesiac and doesn’t remember anything of his past, or where he belongs. What he does learn of his past comes from his recurring, and often traumatizing dreams (as shown in flashback form). He’s not sure whether to follow his dreams, of if they are just that, dreams.

After a year at the academy, Teito takes the graduation exam; it is notoriously difficult to do, with a passing rate of only one in twenty-five. Teito and his best (and only) friend, Mikage, pass easily. That night, in their shared dorm room, they each promise to help the other at any cost.

The next day, Teito is being used as a paper delivery boy to a professor when he overheard his name being spoken. He stops to listen and realizes that the speaker, a man named Ayanami (voiced over by the creepily good voice actor who does Aizen for Bleach, in the Japanese form – who is quite good, imo), is the man who killed his father in his dreams. Teito is found eavesdropping outside and in a rage of hatred, tries to attack his father’s murderer, but is quickly brought down by one of Ayanami’s people, and is subsequently sent to prison.

Mikage comes to help him escape, only to find that Teito has managed to fight past the guards and free himself. The two flee the building, but are cornered on a balcony. Teito pretends to hold Mikage hostage, threatening to kill him; and tries to escape when Ayanami sends a Zaiphon attack after him, which Teito manages to partially deflect, but still ends up taking massive damage.

A Bishop who was out joyriding with fellow bishops in the nearby 7th District brings the injured Teito to the church to recuperate. Since Teito is still in chains, the Bishop, Frau, mistakes him for a slave and comments that if Teito had been a soldier in the Imperial army, he would have killed him immediately. Because of the law of “sanctuary”, Teito may stay in the church without fear of the Empire or Ayanami, or so we are led to believe. This is where the real story seemingly picks up.

With his traumatic past remembered, how will Teito fare? Will he remember everything and pay the people back who did this to him? We can only tune in and find out!

This Anime gets a personal top-3 award for Currently Airing Anime – as of late, this has been admittedly a little easier to get, but this by no means makes the show any less cool. With good action, a seemingly decent plot, and likable character ( I like Frau, and the bodyguard ayanami has myself.) you can instantly like this show, but the Zaiphon and the way they attack are also pretty cool. All in all, I’d rate this a solid 4/5 on the currently airing scale. Do yourself a favor if you like action – watch it. You won’t be disappointed. At the time of this post, there are three episodes out, and I can tell you I’m still jonesing for more.
